Senior Tour legends offer advice at unique kids event at De Vere Slaley Hall
Former Masters and Open Champion Sandy Lyle and defending PGA Seniors Champion Carl Mason took part in a unique kid’s golf clinic in the build-up to the 2010 De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship. Children from Priory Woods School & Arts College were treated to one-on-one tuition from the stars of the European Senior Tour as they gave tips and advice to the youngsters, who were attending Slaley Hall on behalf of the Variety Club, official charity of the 2010 championship. De Vere, title sponsor of the PGA Seniors Championship, have close ties with the Variety Club having raised over £750,000 for the charity in the first year of the partnership which was formed in May 2009. Following the clinic, the Tour stars were joined by Daniel Hodson, De Vere’s Director of Golf & Leisure, and three of the finalists in the Miss Newcastle 2010 contest, to present the Variety Club with a ‘Sunshine Coach’. The coach will be used for a number of roles at the Variety Club, allowing special needs children to access a wider world, with educational and social trips. De Vere’s support of the charity has helped fund twelve ‘Sunshine Coaches’, as well as a number of ‘Easy Rider’ wheelchairs, which are invaluable in improving the standard of life for some children.
Sandy Lyle, returning to the Northumberland resort for the first time since the European Tour events in the 90’s commented, “It’s great to be back at Slaley Hall and to pass on some tips to these young kids. Their energy and enthusiasm is an inspiration, and they certainly seemed to enjoy the tuition session with Carl and I.”
Bob Gladwin, Variety Club Chairman Northern Region, commented, “We have had a fantastic day with Sandy and Carl, and the children have thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them. The support from De Vere, across a number of our initiatives makes a massive difference, and this championship always provides the perfect platform to showcase what we do. A massive thank you must go to everyone at De Vere Slaley Hall, the PGA and to Sandy and Carl for making this such a special occasion. “
The 2010 De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship boasts an outstanding field, with defending champion Carl Mason being joined by eleven ex-Ryder Cup players. Double Major Champion Sandy Lyle is looking for his first PGA Seniors title, and will face stiff competition from two Ryder Cup Captains, Ian Woosnam and Sam Torrance, charismatic Ryder Cup hero Costantino Rocca and a host of decorated names from the European Seniors Tour.
