Moor Allerton Review

A Golfing Experience………

"On a cold, windy day I was completely bowled over by this course and club and it is now a firm favourite in my mind."

First the facts. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones, his first in the UK, and has been linked with Peter Alliss for many years. It has three separate tracks of nine holes for your enjoyment and certainly provides good exercise without the use of a buggy. Facilities are excellent throughout but it was the variety in the course and the ‘little’ things that I loved. It really does leave you with a lot of golfing  memories.

We, Jon Crickmore and I, played all 27 holes with the aid of a buggy and I can honestly say that that the variety of holes and greens was mind blowing! You see the rolling countryside lends itself to both high and low greens and tees. The greens tend to be protected by large  but very fair bunkers. A  sand save will be a doubly difficult if you find them as the undulating greens pose more questions to your golfing skills. On the day they were a little furry as they were being protected after the poor weather but they are of undoubted quality and are considered the best in the area. High praise indeed with Alwoodley and Moortown golf clubs nearby.

There is space to drive a ball but your approaches are fraught with danger. A precise shot is needed to find the green and six bunkers found in the last nine holes were testament to a mixture of tiredness, imprecision and downright stubbornness on my part.

Energetic James Whittaker is the new pro and he has big plans for the club along with the other club officials we talked to. The result of these plans would be as an open Qualifying course asap and I for one thinks that it would be a fine and appropriate challenge for professional golfers. He was so busy we decided to postpone our short game lesson until after the Gtour event on Saturday 24th of april and we look forward to this so much after the bunker experiences etched in recent memory.

My priorities when playing a course is to enjoy it and the surroundings hence Gleneagles, San Lorenzo and Spey Valley, along with my home course S&A, being my favourites. I can honestly say that this course gave me the same sort of kick!

Finally, when considering this review I wrote a couple of notes I wanted to include. “As Gtour members you will be in for a wonderful golfing experience” I‘d written on a notepad. I knew Peter Alliss was attached to the club and I wanted to check the spelling of his name (I don’t want a writ through my letter box, thank you!). I came across a quote of his….“Moor Allerton is a golfing experience larger than life”. You see great minds do think alike and if you don’t believe me then just listen to him!
