SSP Golf Bar
We met the guys from SSP Golf at the London Golf Show earlier this year and they very kindly gave us a stack of their new Golf Bars to test out on the tour. Here is our review of their product.
For those of you who tried the Golf Bar on tour we would love to have your thoughts which we will pass onto the guys at SSP. Email your comments to golf@caddydaddy.co.uk
Who are SSP & what is the Golf Bar?
SSP stands for Sports Specific Products and they now have over 30 years experience in the health and leisure industries.
SSP:Golf Energy Bars were created to shape the future of golf performance nutrition. Their bars were originally developed for professional athletes in the USA and Europe by Lance Geringer B.A. while he was at the California State University of Northridge
The Golf Bar was specifically developed for golfers and their unique energy requirements while playing. Each bar is packed with a multi-stage formula of fast and slow release carbohydrates, offering short term and long term energy. This can give you the fuel you need to fire your way through the Front Nine in style or help eradicate the problem of Back Nine fatigue.

What did I think?

Not being a sports nutritionalist or in any way knowledgable on nuturition it is obvioulsy very difficult / impossible for me to comment on or challenge any of the claims made on their website. From a laymans perspective all I can review is the simple stuff that us golfers are concerned with, ie. how did it taste? how much did it cost? and did I feel like I had more energy on the back nine?
So after trying it out on a few occasions I would have to say that the Golf Bar IMO is probably the best on course health snack that I have personally come across. It tastes great (I particularly liked the chocolate and toffee), is not too sticky or doughy and fills you up without making your jaw ache unlike some other bars we have tried. The bar didnt melt like chocolate even during some extremely hot days and of course it doesn't bruise like fruit, so what more could a golfer ask for?Did I feel like I had more energy one the back nine? Difficult to say but I think yes, and thats probably because I would normally take a couple of bananas and a few chocolate bars, however on these occasions I took only the one golf bar and didnt feel even slightly fatigued at the end of my round.
The bars are certainly not cheap at around £1.40 per bar, however when you consider that I felt the same if not a little stronger after my round without having my fruit and chocolate with an approximate cost of £1.50 it could be argued that this in fact is good value for money, besides compare this against the cost of the golf balls I generally loose in a round and it pales into comparison.
In conclusion, im certain that there is huge percentage of golfers out there who could never be persuaded to part with more than the price of a Kit Kat in the pro shop, however I myself will do and I am pleased to have seen these bars popping up in more and more pro shops around the country so perhaps I am not the only fan.
